K53 Learner's Licence Test Questions and Answers
The South African learner's licence theory test is based on the K53 Arrive Alive standard. It covers road signs, road markings, rules of the road, and vehicle controls. Understanding the types of questions asked and the reasoning behind correct answers will significantly improve your chances of passing on the first attempt.
Test Structure and Scoring
The learner's licence test has 100 questions across three sections. All questions are multiple choice with a single correct answer. The test is conducted either on computer or using a paper-based answer sheet at the traffic department.
You must score at least 77 out of 100 to pass for Code 2 and Code 3 licences, and 78 out of 100 for Code 10 and Code 14.
| Section | Number of Questions | Topics Covered |
|---|---|---|
| Road signs | 64 | Regulatory, warning, information, and temporary signs |
| Rules of the road | 24 | Right of way, following distance, speed limits, lane discipline |
| Vehicle controls | 12 | Dashboard instruments, lights, emergency procedures |
Road Signs - Sample Questions
Road signs form the largest portion of the test with 64 questions. South African road signs are categorised as regulatory signs (what you must or must not do), warning signs (hazards ahead), and information/guidance signs.
Regulatory signs are typically circular. Prohibitory signs have a red border on a white background. Mandatory signs are often blue. Warning signs are typically triangular with a red border.
- A circular sign with a red border on white background means prohibition (e.g., no entry, speed limit)
- A triangular sign with a red border warns of a hazard ahead
- A blue circular sign indicates a mandatory action (e.g., keep left)
- A red octagonal STOP sign requires a complete stop before the stop line
- A yield/give way sign is an inverted triangle with red border - you must give way to traffic on the major road
Rules of the Road - Key Topics
The rules of the road section tests your knowledge of intersection priority, following distances, speed limits, overtaking rules, and road markings.
- At an uncontrolled four-way intersection, give way to traffic on your right
- The minimum following distance rule: 2 seconds gap in normal conditions, 4 seconds in rain
- Urban speed limit: 60 km/h unless otherwise indicated
- Freeway speed limit: 120 km/h for light vehicles
- Rural road speed limit: 100 km/h unless otherwise indicated
- You may overtake on the right (passing side) only when safe and legal
- A solid white line on your side means no overtaking; a broken line means overtaking is permitted when safe
Vehicle Controls - Key Topics
The vehicle controls section covers dashboard warning lights, emergency procedures, and basic vehicle safety checks. While this section has fewer questions (12), a failure here can still affect your overall score.
- Red warning lights (engine oil, battery, temperature) require immediate attention and stopping the vehicle safely
- The hazard lights switch is used when the vehicle is stationary and poses a danger to other road users
- Emergency lane departure: signal, check mirrors and blind spot, steer to safety
- A tyre blowout: do not brake sharply - grip the steering wheel firmly and decelerate gradually
- Brake failure: pump the brake pedal, apply the handbrake gradually, use engine braking by downshifting
Complete at least 5 full practice tests of 100 questions each before attempting the official test. Focus on road signs as they carry the most marks.
Where to Find Practice Tests
Practising with mock tests is the most effective way to prepare. Official K53 content is published in the K53 Arrive Alive manual. Several reputable third-party platforms offer free practice tests.
- K53 Arrive Alive manual: available from CNA, Exclusive Books, and online retailers
- NATIS website (www.natis.gov.za): official information and downloadable resources
- Various mobile apps available for Android and iOS - search for K53 learner's licence test
- YouTube tutorials covering road sign identification and rules of the road
- AA South Africa (www.aa.co.za): study resources and test preparation guides
Read every question carefully before answering. Some questions are phrased negatively (what is NOT correct) and it is easy to select the wrong answer if you skim-read.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Confusing regulatory signs with warning signs - look at shape and colour
- Misidentifying right-of-way at four-way stops - traffic already in the intersection has priority
- Forgetting that a yield sign means slow down and be prepared to stop, not just slow down
- Confusing following distance rules for different conditions
- Not reading the full question - some questions ask what you should NOT do
