How to Apply for a Learner's Licence in South Africa

A learner's licence is the mandatory first step before you can take your driver's licence test in South Africa. It is obtained by passing a written theory test at a traffic department, based on the K53 defensive driving standard. The application fee is R130. This guide covers the full process from study to collection.

Eligibility

  • Minimum age: 17 years for Code 1 (motorcycle) and Code 2 (light vehicle)
  • Minimum age: 18 years for Code 10 and Code 14 (heavy/extra heavy vehicles)
  • South African identity document (smart card ID or green barcoded ID book)
  • No prior learner's or driver's licence required for first-time applicants

Documents Required

  • Original South African identity document
  • Two recent ID photographs (35 mm x 45 mm, taken within the last 6 months)
  • Completed LL-1 application form (available at the traffic department or downloadable from www.natis.gov.za)
  • Payment of R130 application and test fee (cash or card, varies by office)

The K53 Theory Test

The learner's licence theory test is based on the K53 Arrive Alive manual. It covers road signs, road markings, rules of the road, and the K53 defensive driving principles. The test is conducted on a computer or paper at the traffic department.

The test consists of three sections: road signs (64 marks), rules of the road (24 marks), and vehicle controls (12 marks) for a total of 100 marks. You need 77 marks for Code 2 and 3, and 78 marks for Code 10 and 14 to pass.

How to Book Your Test

  1. Visit your nearest traffic department or go online at www.enatis.com to check availability.
  2. Complete the LL-1 application form.
  3. Bring all required documents and pay the R130 fee.
  4. Receive your test booking date and time.
  5. Study using the K53 manual and practise with online mock tests.
  6. Arrive at the traffic department at least 30 minutes before your booking time.

After Passing

If you pass the theory test, your learner's licence is issued on the same day or shortly after. The learner's licence is valid for 24 months from the date of issue.

While holding a learner's licence, you may drive on public roads only if accompanied by a licensed driver who holds a valid driver's licence for the vehicle type. You must display L-plates (learner plates) on the front and rear of the vehicle.

  • Display L-plates on front and rear of the vehicle at all times while driving
  • A licensed supervisor must be seated in the front passenger seat
  • You may not drive at night on a learner's licence (between 10 pm and 5 am) unless accompanied by a licensed supervisor
  • Your learner's licence is valid for 24 months - you must pass your driver's licence test within this period
