How to Get a SARS Tax Number: Register for Income Tax

A SARS income tax reference number is a unique 10-digit number that identifies you as a registered taxpayer in South Africa. You need a tax number to file tax returns, register on eFiling, apply for tax clearance certificates and access many financial services. Registering is free and takes a few days.

Who Needs a Tax Number?

Any person who earns income in South Africa and whose income exceeds the tax threshold is legally required to register with SARS and obtain a tax number. However, even those below the threshold often need a tax number for practical reasons.

  • Employees starting their first job
  • Freelancers and self-employed individuals
  • People applying for tax clearance certificates
  • Foreign nationals earning income in South Africa
  • Business owners registering a company
  • Students who earn part-time income
  • Anyone opening certain bank accounts or investment accounts

How to Register for a Tax Number

Option 1: Via the SARS MobiApp (Recommended)

  1. Download the SARS MobiApp from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
  2. Open the app and select Register as a New Taxpayer.
  3. Scan your South African ID or enter your ID number manually.
  4. Complete facial verification using your phone camera.
  5. Enter your personal details including your name, address and contact information.
  6. SARS will issue your tax reference number within 24 to 48 hours. You will receive an SMS confirmation.
  7. Use your tax number to register on eFiling.

Option 2: At a SARS Branch

Visit your nearest SARS branch during operating hours. Bring the required documents listed below. A SARS official will capture your details and you will receive your tax number on the same day in most cases.

Find your nearest branch at www.sars.gov.za under Contact Us.

Option 3: Through Your Employer

If you have just started employment, your employer can register you for a tax number as part of the payroll onboarding process. Provide your ID and personal details to your HR or payroll department.

Your employer submits an IT77 form to SARS on your behalf. SARS will then issue a tax number to your employer, who will pass it on to you.

Documents Required for Tax Number Registration

  • South African ID document (green barcoded ID book or smart ID card)
  • Foreign nationals: valid passport and proof of visa or work permit
  • Proof of residential address (utility bill, bank statement or lease agreement not older than 3 months)
  • Proof of banking details (bank statement or cancelled cheque)
  • Completed IT77 registration form (available at SARS branches or on www.sars.gov.za)

SARS will only disclose your tax number to you personally after verifying your identity. Never ask a third party to retrieve your tax number without written authorisation.

How to Find a Lost or Forgotten Tax Number

If you have previously registered for a tax number but cannot remember it, try the following options:

Check old correspondence from SARS such as ITA34 assessment notices or any SARS letters.

Log in to eFiling if you already have an account; your tax number is displayed on the dashboard.

Check your IRP5 certificate from your employer, which includes your tax number.

Call SARS on 0800 00 7277 with your ID number and they will provide your tax number after verifying your identity.

Visit a SARS branch with your ID document.
