SASSA War Veterans Grant: R2,315 Per Month for Qualifying Veterans
The War Veterans Grant is a monthly social grant of R2,315 paid by SASSA to South Africans who served in World War II or the Korean War and are now aged 60 or older, or who have a disability. What Is the War Veterans Grant?
The War Veterans Grant pays R2,315 per month (2026 amount) to qualifying veterans. It is higher than the standard Older Persons Grant and is available to those who served in the Second World War (1939-1945) or the Korean War (1950-1953) while in the service of the South African government.
If a war veteran also needs full-time care, they may additionally qualify for the Grant-in-Aid (R510/month extra).
Due to the age of qualifying conflicts, very few applicants remain. If you are applying on behalf of a surviving veteran, additional documentation confirming their service record will be required.
Who Qualifies for the War Veterans Grant?
- You must have served in World War II or the Korean War in the service of the South African government.
- You must be a South African citizen or permanent resident.
- You must be 60 years of age or older, OR have a disability.
- You must pass the means test (income and assets must fall below SASSA thresholds).
- You must not be permanently cared for in a state institution.
Documents Required
- South African ID document or passport.
- Proof of military service (discharge papers, service record, or letter from the Department of Defence).
- Proof of age (birth certificate or ID).
- If applying due to disability: medical report from a registered doctor.
- Proof of residence.
- Proof of income or assets (bank statements, payslips, or pension letter).
- Completed SASSA application form.
How to Apply
- Gather all required documents including proof of military service.
- Visit your nearest SASSA office. Call 0800 60 10 11 to find the closest one.
- Request the War Veterans Grant application form and complete it with assistance from a SASSA official.
- Submit your documents. A SASSA official will verify your service record.
- SASSA will process the application within 90 days and notify you of the outcome.
- If approved, choose your payment method: SASSA card or direct bank transfer.
Relationship to the Older Persons Grant
The War Veterans Grant is a separate grant to the Older Persons Grant. A qualifying veteran receives the War Veterans Grant instead of the Older Persons Grant, not in addition to it.
Because the War Veterans Grant amount is higher than the Older Persons Grant, qualifying veterans benefit from applying specifically for the War Veterans Grant.
Appealing a Declined Application
If SASSA declines your application, you have 90 days to appeal to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA). Submit your appeal at any SASSA office with any additional documentation that supports your case.
