Why Is Child Support Paid on 5 October?

The standard SASSA payment cycle pays the Child Support Grant on the third working day of the month. Since 1 October 2026 is a Thursday (day 1) and 2 October is a Friday (day 2), the weekend falls on days 3 and 4. SASSA therefore pays the Child Support Grant on Monday, 5 October 2026 — the next available working day.

This pattern only affects months where the 3rd falls on a Saturday or Sunday. In October 2026, beneficiaries of Child Support and Foster Child grants should plan to collect on or after Monday 5 October.

Where to Collect in October 2026

Post Office and PostBank ATMs

  • PostBank ATMs at Post Office branches are available 24/7.
  • Post Office branches are open Mon–Fri 08:30–17:00 and Sat 09:00–13:00.
  • No public holidays fall on the main October payment days (1–5 October).

Community Pay Points

SASSA community pay points operate in the first three payment days of October (1, 2, and 5 October 2026). These mobile and fixed pay sites serve areas without easy access to banks or Post Offices.

Bring your SASSA card and original South African ID. SASSA will biometrically verify your identity. Arrive at pay points early — queues form quickly in the morning and tend to be shorter by mid-morning.

Banks and Retail Stores

  • All major banks (ABSA, Standard Bank, Capitec, Nedbank, FNB) are open on 1 and 2 October 2026.
  • Capitec, Nedbank, and FNB branches in Shoprite malls are also open Saturday 3 October for those who cannot collect during the week.
  • Cashback at Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Checkers, USave, and Boxer on purchases — no fees.
  • Only withdraw what you need — do not store large amounts of cash at home.

October Grant Safety Tips

  • October marks the start of the festive spending season — be alert for increased opportunistic crime at ATMs and pay points.
  • Never hand your card or PIN to anyone else, even to assist you.
  • Use the SASSA balance check before going to the ATM to avoid an unnecessary trip.
  • If you notice an ATM has been tampered with (e.g. loose card slot, suspicious device), do not use it — report it to the bank or SAPS.
  • SASSA officials do not call you asking for your card details or OTP — hang up immediately if you receive such a call.
