When Do Increases Take Effect?
Grant increases announced in the February National Budget Speech typically take effect from 1 April of that year. Your first payment at the new rate will usually appear in the April SASSA payment run.
Payments made in January, February, and March are still at the prior year's rate. SASSA does not backdate increases.
How Are Grant Increases Calculated?
The National Treasury and the Department of Social Development negotiate grant increases as part of the annual budget process. Increases are broadly linked to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) — the official measure of inflation — but the final amount is a political and fiscal decision.
Grant amounts have historically increased by between 3% and 7% per year, sometimes ahead of inflation and sometimes below it depending on fiscal constraints.

Why Your Increase May Differ
Some grant recipients may notice their payment did not increase as expected. Common reasons include: a means test review that reduced the grant, a temporary suspension, banking details that need updating, or a grant that is due for renewal.
Contact SASSA immediately if your April payment does not reflect the new amount.
