School Admission in South Africa: Complete Guide for 2026

Enrolling a child in a South African public school requires applying through the relevant Provincial Education Department (PED). Each province has its own admission process and timelines, but all are governed by the South African Schools Act (SASA) and the DBE's national admission policy. Applications for the following year typically open between January and April.

How School Admissions Work in South Africa

In South Africa, public school admissions are managed by each province. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) sets national policy, but the nine Provincial Education Departments handle day-to-day enrolment. You apply to a school or through a provincial portal, and the School Governing Body (SGB) manages the actual admission.

All South African children between the ages of 7 and 15, or who have not yet completed Grade 9, must attend school. Foreign nationals and undocumented children also have the right to be admitted to public schools and may not be turned away solely on the basis of lacking documentation.

Admission by Province

Each province has its own system. Below are the two largest provinces. For other provinces, contact the relevant PED or visit www.education.gov.za for links.

GautengApply online via the Gauteng Online Admissions Systemwww.gdeadmissions.gov.za
Western CapeApply via WCEDonlinehttps://wcedonline.westerncape.gov.za/AdmissionsLogin

Apply early. Popular schools fill quickly and late applications may result in your child being placed at an alternative school further from home.

When to Apply

For Grade 1 admissions, Gauteng opens its online portal around January each year for the following year. Western Cape typically opens in February. Most other provinces accept applications from January through to March or April for enrolment in January the following year.

For mid-year enrolments or grade transfers, apply at the school directly as soon as possible. Schools must accept learners at any time during the year if space permits.

Documents Required for School Admission

  • Birth certificate or acceptable proof of age for the child
  • Immunisation card or road-to-health card
  • Parent or guardian's proof of residence (utility bill or affidavit)
  • Parent or guardian's identity document
  • Previous school report or transfer card (for learners already in school)
  • Refugee permit or asylum seeker documentation (for non-citizens)

Schools may not charge application fees or require uniforms as a condition of admission. These practices are unlawful.

What If Your Child Is Refused Admission?

A school may not refuse admission on the basis of race, language, religion, or lack of documentation. If a school is full, it must refer you to the district office for placement assistance.

If you believe your child was unlawfully refused admission, you can lodge a complaint with the Provincial Education Department or contact the South African Human Rights Commission.
