How to Find and Apply for Government Jobs in South Africa

The South African public service employs over 1.2 million people across national and provincial departments, making it one of the country's largest employers. Government jobs offer stable employment, defined career paths, medical aid contributions, and pension fund membership. This guide explains how to find vacancies, complete the Z83 application form, and navigate the public service hiring process.

Where to Find Government Job Vacancies

Public Service Vacancy Circular (PSVC)

The primary source for all national and provincial government vacancies is the Public Service Vacancy Circular (PSVC), published every Friday by the Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA). The circular lists all current vacancies across all national departments and the nine provincial governments.

Access the PSVC at www.dpsa.gov.za — click on 'Vacancies' or 'Public Service Vacancy Circular'. Each circular is numbered by year and week (e.g., Circular 23 of 2026). Back-issues are archived on the site.

The PSVC is also published in the Government Gazette every Friday and summarised in major newspapers, though the DPSA website is the most reliable and complete source.

Other Sources for Government Vacancies

  • Individual department websites (e.g., www.health.gov.za, www.education.gov.za, www.saps.gov.za)
  • Provincial government portals (e.g., www.gpg.gov.za for Gauteng, www.westerncape.gov.za for the Western Cape)
  • State-owned entities (SOEs) such as Eskom, Transnet, PRASA, and SANRAL post vacancies on their own websites
  • Indeed.co.za and LinkedIn also aggregate some government and SOE postings
  • The Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) and other public entities have their own careers pages

The Z83 Application Form

Every application for a position in the South African public service must be submitted on a Z83 form (Application for Employment). Using the incorrect form, or submitting an application without it, will result in automatic disqualification.

  1. Download the current Z83 form from www.dpsa.gov.za (under 'Downloads' or 'Forms').
  2. The form must be fully and neatly completed in BLOCK letters.
  3. Sign Part F of the form — unsigned Z83 forms are disqualified.
  4. Attach a recently updated comprehensive CV (3-5 pages is standard).
  5. Note: Since 2021, applicants are NOT required to attach certified copies of qualifications and ID at the application stage. Only shortlisted candidates are requested to submit certified copies.
  6. Submit the Z83 and CV by the closing date specified in the advert — late applications are not accepted.

How to Apply for a Government Job

  1. Find a suitable vacancy in the PSVC at www.dpsa.gov.za.
  2. Note the post title, reference number, salary level, and closing date.
  3. Read the requirements carefully — check the minimum NQF level, years of experience, and any specific certifications needed.
  4. Download and complete the Z83 form.
  5. Write or update your CV to address the specific requirements of the post.
  6. Submit your application by the method specified in the advert: post, hand delivery, or email.
  7. Quote the reference number and post title in the subject line of your email or on the envelope.
  8. Keep a copy of everything you submit.

The Government Hiring Process

Government recruitment takes longer than private sector hiring. After the closing date, shortlisting typically takes 4-8 weeks. Interviews are conducted by a structured panel and use competency-based questions. Background checks (criminal record, credit check, qualification verification) are conducted before an offer is made.

If you have not heard back within 3 months of the closing date, it is safe to assume your application was unsuccessful. The PSVC states that if you have not been contacted within 3 months, consider your application unsuccessful.
