You can search for any registered South African company, close corporation, or cooperative on the CIPC website at www.cipc.co.za. The search is free for basic company information. You can check whether a business name is already registered, verify that a company is active, and find the registration number and registered address.
Why You Need to Search a Business Name
Before registering a new company name, you must check that the name is not already in use. CIPC will reject a name reservation if the name is identical or confusingly similar to an existing registration.
You may also need to search a business name to verify that a company is legitimately registered before entering a contract, to check who the directors are, or to confirm a company number for tender submissions.
How to Search for a Company Name on CIPC
- Go to www.cipc.co.za.
- Navigate to eServices, then Company or CC Enquiries.
- Select Name Search or enter a company name or registration number.
- Enter the company name (partial names work) or the full registration number.
- View the free basic result showing company name, registration number, status, and registration date.
- To get more detailed information including directors, registered address, and annual return history, purchase a disclosure document for approximately R50 to R170.
Finding no results in a CIPC name search does not guarantee that your chosen name will be approved. CIPC makes a final determination based on the full name database.
Checking Name Availability Before Registration
CIPC name availability can be checked using the same search tool. If a search returns no results for a specific name, it may be available for registration.
CIPC assesses name reservations against the following criteria: the name must not be the same or confusingly similar to an existing name, must not be offensive, and must comply with the Companies Act requirements.
Name Reservation Process
Before registering, you can optionally reserve your company name for R50. A reservation is valid for 6 months and guarantees the name while you complete registration.
Name reservations are submitted through the CIPC eServices portal. Up to 4 alternative names can be submitted in order of preference in case your first choice is rejected.
Prohibited and Restricted Names
- Names identical or confusingly similar to existing registrations
- Names that imply government connection (e.g., using words like National, Government, or Municipality) without approval
- Names that are offensive or contrary to public policy
- Names that falsely imply a professional service not held by the owners (e.g., using Legal or Medical)
- Names too similar to well-known trademarks
Third-Party Business Search Services
Several commercial services provide enhanced company information searches in South Africa, including BizPortal, CompanySearch, and credit bureau services.
These services may aggregate CIPC data with other commercial databases to provide credit scores, director histories, and litigation records. They typically charge a fee per search.
